KUMEROA SPORTS.
For some years £>ast a sports meeting has been held on Easter Monday at Hopeland, and one at Kumeroa some time later. Owing to their proximity, the two meetings somewhat overlapped each other. Wise counsels prevailed, and it was arranged between the two clnbs to amalgamate and hold a combined meeting at Kumeroa. The iirst combined meeting Mas. held yesterday, and the results fully justified the combination, as the sports were most enjoyable from every point of view. The energetic managing committee wisely decided to make the programme of as varied a character as possible, thus giving the - necessary variety to keep the public amused. Where a farming community composes the bulk of a sports gathering, a feast of athletics is not relished, hut where the athletics are interspersed with a few equestrian events, the programme is bound to be popular. Such a programme was provided at Kumeroa yesterday. Fortunately the threatening rain held off until very late in the afternoon, and the club was favored with a good attendance, although the showers of the early morning militated against a very large attendance to a certain extent. Throughout large fields were, the order of the day, and the handicapper gave no races away, every event being fought to a finish. Over sixty competitors entered in the chainstepping competition, which was a source of great amusement to the public as well as profit to the club. The regulation chain was expanded and contracted to a great extent by some of the competitors, although it was noticeable that the lady compeitors were just as good judges of distances as the men were. The club is rich in the possession of hardworking officials, ably backed up by a most capable and energetic" secretary in Mr W. Dobson. Mr Rosenberg officiated as starter in his usual manner, giving satisfaction to all competitors. The. prize list was as follows: 100 yards handicap, for boys under 16: H. Murray 1, C. Mexted 2.
