Sir Robert Stout's address to the University Senate is not so long as usual, fie states that if mathematics is insisted on at matriculation, students should be permitted to obtain the B.A. degree without further mathematics, but he would insist on botany, zoology, chemistry, or physics being compulsory. If this concession be granted, there is no need to approach Parliament for power to grant a Bachelor of Literature degree. Our requirements in mathematics for B.A. degree are more exacting than Cambridge. On the question of University reform, Sir Robert remarks that the issues are too large and complicated to be disposed of hurriedly. There is in N.Z. the special question of the disposal of the accumulated funds. If they are to be divided between the affiliated colleges, it will be difficult to arrive at the principle of division. The principal sources of income were—State grant £3OOO, fees £6302, interest £1009; and the expenditure was—salaries £1035, examiner £2926, scholarships £1915; balance in hand £1250.
