A serious epidemic is raging amongst poultry, and thousands are dying. Experts are oi : opinion it is cholera. A Victorian yacht is to be built to defend the Northcote Cup. Mr Deakin, in a speech at Ballarat, said that by the help of Lord Kitchener's judgment and knowledge, he hoped to evolve a defence scheme which would stand to them without the idle sacrifice of their young manhood in their last emergency. Sir Robert Best, who followed, repudiated Mr W .Crooks' cabled statement in regard to preference. He declared that no sentiment was more popular throughout Australia last year. It had meant a voluntary gift of £828,000 in duties to British merchants.
