RIO JANIERO.

Mr Cunninghame, of Pahnerston North, thus refers to the South

American city

May 17. — The great event of the. trip eam'e off yesterday, and to have iniss'.-d Rio dc Janierp would be mis-' sing "an event of a lifetime. The 1 beauty of tlie harbor is past deserip- i tion. and I will never forget the sight as ivc arrived in tlve harbor on Simday morning. Notwithstanding the day . -roryrliiug was izi full swing. Tim iiiarkoc place was doing a great im&iiK-ss, thongh several of the shops were closed. . The.' chimes of the Koman Catholic Cathedral were the only indication of ~the day; otherwise it is"-n. groat holiday. We visited ono street whore beauty surpassed l.'eauiy. It is the finest in the; world. Fifteen millions have so 'far beer, spent on it. Its footpaths are 30ft wide, and all marble, with beautiful mosaic designs. The street is as smooth as any floor, and is three mile* long. No heavy 'traffic or electric trams axe allowed on it, the only vehicles- being motor cars and motor buses. Most of the buildings in this

street are, solid marble. A party of us wont out in one of the electrictrams to the Botanical Gardens, a five-mile ride through the city. A beautiful esplanade runs for seven .cr -r-i'jzhi lrilcs along the harbor. 'ieuiitif.;; i'tiiJM'juo and ihr.vers, ' av.<\ cautii'it ly kept gardens everywhere ..ieet the eye. We paid 400 r<n.i iVhout 6d) for the lOmile ride-. Lunch <::.<t us 1200 reis. When we asked for biscuits they brought us whisky! But after a time we managed to make them understand. The habits jijhJ customs of the people are so different to ours, and, like the city, cannot be described on paper. We left about six in the evening, and to see the city and harbor lit with electric light is a sight alone worth, travelling from New Zealand to see. We passed out of the harbor between eight Brazilian warships and forts on either side of us. Our next port of call will be Teneriffe.
