AUSTRALIA v. LANCASHIRE AND YORKSHIRE. Press Assn— By telegraph— Copyright. LONDON, yesterday. The first innings of Australia* was declared closed with six wickets down for 217. The principal scores were :

Hirst took two wickets lor 40, Brearley none for 29, Huddlestone one for 35, Rhodes three for 61, and Haigh none for 35. The weather was gloomy after a bright morning, and th© wicket soft, but not' 'treacherous. Three thousand people were present. Noble won the toss. The first wicket (Bardsley's) was down for a single. Armstrong played very steadily, •arid compiled his score in 225 minutes. The second wicket fell for 25. Ransford and Armstrong had a useful partnership. The wickets fell smartly till the sixth wicket was taken at 157. Carter then became partnered with Armstrong, and the pair remained together till the innings Avas declared closed. Yorkshire and Lancashire lost two wickets for 10 runs— Hartley 1, Rhodes (not out) 2, Tyldesley 9, Dento ji (not out) 0. *>
