IMPRISONMENT

The hearing of this case was concluded at Napier to-day.

The jury were iv retirement for 2.1 hours, and at the end of that time returned a verdict of guilty.

His Honor, in passing sentence, said ho was sorry ho could not accede to the request of counsel- (for mercy). The statute was framed for the purpose of punishing such offences as accused was charged with, and accused as a solicitor should have known and observed the provisions of the law. His duty was therefore clear and he would do it. Accused would bo sentenced to i~\v<> months' imprisonment, without hnzxl labor. 'It was a pity that a man of accused's education ancl social position should be sent to gaol, and he would communicate with the Minister to see what could be done to prevent the necessity of his having to associate with other inmates of the prison.
