The members of the State Cabinet welcomed Sir Joseph Ward and entertained him at luncheon in the Parliament building. In -addition, to the State members, there were present Messrs Deakin, Cook and Sir John Forrest. The latter proposed the guest's health in the absence, of Mr Deakin, who left to attend the opening of the Federal Parliament. He said Sir Joseph Ward was recognised throughout Australia and England as a very

strong man. "He accomplished great ■work during a strenuous public career. Australia was proud of his la-test act in offering a New Zealand Dreadnought. He regarded the coming conference :is the greatest in history since the days of Napoleon. He wished him a successful mission, and was sure Sir Joseph Ward would jiako a loading distinguished part. Sir Joseph Ward, replying, said he was proud to represent loyal New Zealand. He regarded the conference as a momentous one in the Empire's history. He would gladly cooperate with Australia's representative in the promotion of the Empire's interests. The Parliamentary Ministers gave Sir Joseph Ward an enthusiastic send-off.
