[PRESS ASSOCIATION.] PALMERSTON N:, to-day. A very heavy thunderstorm was experienced in Palmerston last night, accompanied, by torrents of rain. Ciiptain Howiii, lion, astronomer to tho Philosophical Society, reports the appearance of a moderate-sized group of sunspots on the sun's disc this morning, and suggests that last night's storm was the result of their influence on meteorological conditions. Rev. D. C. Bates wired to-day as follows : — Southerly moderate to strong winds probably .cold, squally and showery; glass rise,; probably frost to-night.
