NATIONAL DAIRY SHOW.

[press association.] PALMERSTON N., last night. The root crops are a magnificent display. The Luxford shield, for the best collection of field roots, was won by W. J. Balsiflie, Slack Bros, second, and J. B. Lancaster third. Mt Cuddie, speaking of butter and cheese, said it was excellent in quality, the cheese being especially good. The school . exhibits were comprehensive, and the Department 'bf Agriculture has a very largo show covering all phases of agricultural life. It is the best display ever put together by the department and created much interest. Taken as a whole the Dairy Show is tho greatest achievement in the kind yet arrived at in the dominion. PALMERSTON N., to-day. The Manawatu Winter Show was continued to-day in fine but gloomy weather. The attendance was again very large, the excursion trains bringing large contingents of visitors from different parts of the district. Judging was completed to-day in the poultry utility classes, and fat stock. The principal winners in poultry were : — R. Bannister, Brahamas. E. H. Holland (B_nnnythorpe) Langshans, who also divided honors in Leghorns with B. McCormick (Hastings), Aitcheson and Son (Palmerston N.), and J. Green (Bulls). Mr S. R. Lancaster was the principal exhibitor in Plymouth Rocks. O. H. Pickering, of New Plymouth, was the most successful competitor in white varieties. A. H. Guthrie, of Wellington, secured all the first in Black Orpingtons. Mrs S. Reed, of Lower Woodlands, and Mrs W. Heslop, of Wanganui, divided honors in Buff Orpingtons Mr H. Pickering was tbe -only exhibitor in white. In Silver Wyandottes there was big competition. The successful exhibitors were: Wellington breeders, J. Iremongor and Currie, in whites; Mrs Heslop, Wanganui, and A. Hickling, Mangahao, also secured firsts. Mr J. Brown, of Matamau secured two- firsts in whites, and C. Hansard, of Dannevirke, J. Robson, Marton, the other firsts. T. Harvie, Palmerston North, and j. C. H. Burnett divided honors in the partridge varieties. Two Mangatainoka breeders, R. A. Williams and {Sarah .Cowan, divided honors in Minorcas. In Brown Leghorns, R. Young, E. B_roughton (Bulls), E. H. Holland, and J. D. Iremonger secured firsts. . In any other variety of Leghorns H. Manguson (Eketahuna) and J. Goodwin (Dannevirke) were the most successful exhibitors. The entries this year are not so numerous, but the judge, Mr Casey, of Lower Hutt, considered tlie quality throughout excellent. In fat stock F. S. Mcßae is first, and H. F. Arkwriglit is the principal prize-taker in fat sheep classes. E. White and Slack Bros, are tho largest winners in the pig classes. From a private source we learn that local breeders secured cards as follows-* White Wyandottes : — Cockerel : C. Hansard 1, E. T. Bate-man 2 and 3. Hen: J. Brown (Matamau) first. Cock: J. Brown 1 and 2. Pullet: E. T. Bateman 2, C. Hansard 3 and v.h.c. Mr Murcott was awarded h.c. for cockerel.

Mr A. B. Knight advertises for tenders for digging 46 chains of drains. A collision occurred yesterday afternoon between a trap driven by Mrs Hartgill and containing as well Mrs Knight and Mrs Lloyd, and a four-wheeled buggy driven by Mr Reed, of Mangotoro, at a narrow place on the road just a few chains this side of the Manawatu bridge. Tho occupants of the trap wore all thrown out, and Mrs Knight was pinned beneath it. The horse behaved fairly well, but in starting forward the wheel went over Mrs Hartgill's foot. Mrs Lloyd was thrown clear. Tlie buggy and its occupants suffered' no harm. A willing volunteer went back to Kaitoke with Mrs Hartgill's horse and got ane! her trap and some more harness, and the party came into town about an hour later, none the worse except for a feAV bruises. The trap had the swingle- bar broken and some other injuries, and was towed into town behind a dray filled with metal.
