The members of the newly-elected Borough Council have shown a proper appreciation of their responsibilities in regard to the subway question. It is true that the duty of the Council in this matter presented no difficulty, but Borough Councils, like other local bodies, do not always keep to the obviously projjer course, and the result is often attended with disastrous consequences to the ratepayers. Fortunately, the town councillors took a reasonable view of the offer made by the Government, which means that by a contribution, of £300 Dannevirke will be given the benefit of n subway in preference to an overhead bridge. At this price the added convenience, of the subway, as compared with a bridge, will be cheaply purchased. On the ground of utility the comparison is all in favor of the subway, and the charge on the borough fund will not be a serious inconvenience. The "attitude taken up by the Minister was not an' unreasonable one. He had only to consider the subject as affecting the railway department. An overhead bridge Mas all that was required for its purpost?, Mr Milar was, therefore, justified in laying down the position that if something else was required which would be of more- convenience to the residents, they must find tlie money for the difference. The subway will be a benefit to the town as a whole. It is only just, therefore, that the money should be ■> found through the rates, and by this means the willing horse will, for once, be given a little rest. "We congratulate the Borough Councillors on the businesslike manner in which they have dealt with this matter, and hope- it will prove a happy augury for the successful transaction of future business. The Chamber of Commerce is also deserving of a meed of praise for the assistance they have given in forwarding the proposal for a subway, and we may hope that the members of that body will be stimulated and 011---conrsiged. by the. success achieved to increase their activities in any direction that will promote the best interests of th« town and district. The

efforts of members of. the Chamber do not always receive that support and appreciation they deserve, but Aye feel sure that the good work they have accomplished in regard to the subway will now be warmly acknowledged by all, even by those who were disposed at one time to think that any action by the Chamber in the matter was an intrusion. Finally, the services rendered by Mr HaH, M.P., should not be forgotten. The member for the district spared no pains to forward the interests of his constituents, and it is but common justice that those services should be acknowledged.
