A PECULIAR OUTBREAK; > [PRESS ASSOCIATION.] AVANGANUI, to-day. A fire broke out this morning in the telephone exchange. Some liner men had been working on a subscriber's wire in the Avenue, when one of the men lot the wire slip. • It came in contact with the traniAvay trolley wire, and the effect was instantaneous, every shutter on the distributing board in the telephone office immediate^ going up to the amazement of the operators. < Soon? after, "it was discovered ; that the tar, jute, etc., round the cables in the ceiling of the Telephone room were on fire, the flames rapidly running along the wires. The fire was practically subdued by the telephone officials before the arrival of the brigade. . Considerable damage '-"was done by water, though the officials took every 'precaution. to protect the mechanism. All the local -telephone wires are at present in . contact, and it is hoped to completely restore all communication in a day or two. . : ■-
