EXIT HON. A. W. HOGG

"• m . The retirement of the Hon. A. W. Hogg from the Ministry does not come as a surprise. It was apparent, after the Minister's speech on Saturday, that the Premier would have to, consider the position. As Mr Hogg holds extreme views upon some questions, and as these views are not shared by the members of the Cabinet/ it followed that Mr Hogg must either suppress his views or be sup : pressed himself. We regret the result. Mr Hogg would have made an excellent Minister of Roads and Bridges, and in that capacity could have rendered valuable service to the country. However, under the particular circumstances, there was only one course openj Mr Hogg loses a marvellous opportunity to improve his political status, and the country loses an able administrator. But of the wisdom of the course taken by the Premier there can be no shadow of a doubt. The present is not the time to ventilate extreme, views, which may have the effect f of- further alarming capital, which is notoriously "shy."
