A GOVERNMENT CAUCUS.

WELLINGTON,, to-day. A caucus of Government supporters, presided over by the Premier, was attended by 44 members and seven others were accounted for. The Premier intimated that after careful consideration it was intended to propose Mr Guinness as Speaker,' and Mr Wilford, Chairman of Committees. Other gentlemen who had claims to consideration had kindiy intimated their desire to make the way clear for the members named. Explaining the business to be discussed, Sir Joseph said there would be the Loan- Bill. 'It would bo necessary to increase the unauthorised expenditure, but every item would be on the Estimates when Parliament resumed. The matter of the Government's offer of the Dreadnoughts "would be brought forward. . ' Parliament was formally opened at 11.30 in tho Legislative Council Chamber, by Comlnission, composed of Hpns. Bowen, Dr Findlay, McLean, George, T. Thompson, and T. Kelly, before a fair attendance of members. .- ;•: • • . The Hon. Mr, Duncan nominated Mr A. R. Guinness for the Speakership, and Mr Hanan seconded. No other nominations were received, and Mr Guinness returned thanks, and took the chair. Sir Joseph Ward -and Mr Massey having congratulated him on his appointment, the former moved the adjournment till 3.30 to allow - tie Speaker to submit himself to the Gov,ernor for approval, and the Hovfse >roso at 12.30 p.m.
