DANNEVIRKE AMATEUR OPERATIC SOCIETY.

"H.M.S. PINAFORE." The first practice of the above opera was held last evening in the Parish Hall. There was a good attendance and some useful work was accomplished. Tho practice was preceded .by a meeting, Mr W. H. Hartgill (president )in the -chair. The rules which were adopted at hist meeting, were then confirmed. Tho resignations of Mr J. It. Russell and Mr T. 0. Kerr as conductor and pianist (respectively were accepted, and tho meeting, placed on record its .appreciation oi : the services rendered by these gentlemen in the past productions of the society. ' Mr G. W. Wright was elected conductor and Mrs Evans pianist, and each returned their thanks for elec- . tion. . . . The following new members wore tin's afternoon passed and elected by the committee and conductor: Mrs Gillespie, Misses Tansley (2), Robertson, Wiltshire, Eaton, 'Bowie-Stew-art, Derrett, Beresford. Loft, Burkenshaw, and Meredith;, Messrs Woods, Huntley- Walker, Meredith, Gillespie, Fathers, Bert Smith, Reid, Melville, Vartou, Eaton, Roy Robertshawe. ■'Members' and new members requiring vocal scores should at once apply to the secretary, Mr Lawfo'rd, Union Bank, as nearly all are taken up. It is intended to produce the work in ten weeks' time, arid a. prompt and regular attendance of members is essential. The properties and band parts are on their way to Dannevirke, and when, received the music will be handed to the society's leader, Mr A. E. Savage, and will be taken in hand by his orchestral band.
