TWO HOTELS PARTIAELY DESTROYED. : ,• [PBEBS ASSOCIATION.] • ' ." . . WANGANUI, -to-day : • By a fire at Wayerley last night, the Commercial Hotel, of 30 or .40 rooms, was completely gutted, and tlie. Clarendon Hotel partially destroyed. The fire originated in the kitchen of tho Commercial, which was owned by Ellis, and occupied by Smith. The latter is a heavy loser. The hotels are on opposite sides of the street; and the Fire Brigade,* who ' have no high pressure, water supply, had great difficulty in preventing the spread of the fire. The damage to the Clarendon, occupied" by Oakenfull, is estimated at several lmndreds of iJounds! . Insurances: Commercial building, £900; stock, £300 ; -furniture, £700, in /the? Atlas. Clarendon building : £1025, furniture and stocky £875,' in Atlas. The inmates of the Commercial lost ' ; nearly .all -their belongings," escaping' in their night-clothes. '.
