LANDS FOR SETTLEMENT.

• • ♦ The following particulars of land shortly to bo offered for settlement in Hawke's Bay should prove of interest to our readers : 4- .' Nine hundred and fifty-four acres of first-class' land- in Hawko's Bay ]\avo been thrown open for selection on renewable lease, and applications will bo received therefor up till Tuesday, December Bth. The land is distributed among five settlements. In the Hatuma Settlement, which is forty-eight miles from Napier and four miles frdm Waipukurau, fifteen sections arc offered.: The largest is 255 acres, others varying in size dowii to 5 ' acres. - The half-yearly rental .for the" former is £6 8s 3d, that for the smallest section being £1 7s. Tho whole area is under gi-ass. Most of the sections are watered, whilo on others water will probably be obtained by sinking. There is a post office, store, and school on tho settlement. Two sections of low-lying river-flat land in tho Lindsay Settlement, which is about one mile from the Waipawa post office and railway station, will also l>e allotted. One is of A\ acres, and the other of 2$ acres. In the To Mata atnd TeArai Settlements, but one section is to be disposed of. Both are good, flat agricultural land. That ; at To Mata ia six acres in area, arid is about a mile and three-quarters froni Havelock, while tho Te, Arai allotment is of 9£ acres, and is nine miles and three-quarters from Gisborne. The six sections in the Raumati Settlement to be granted on the same tenure, are all much larger than those just referred to, for they cover 783 acres in-''slie' ; - aggregate. , The largest of 21 7$ acres in extent, and the smallest is 1021 acres. The halfyeg'rfy; rentals- work, out at an averageof about £36 per 100 acres. The settlement is about two and a-half miles from Dannevirke, is intersected by the . Wellington-Napier railway, and is within half-a-mile of the Mangatera, Piripirij - and Matamau sidings. The whole area was fornierly under heavy forest, from which the valuable timber has been removed, and the remainder partly cleared. A largo portion of each section is in English grass." 'The soil is of even quality throughout ; tho : subsoil is clay, on p^pa formation. ..In addition to these sections the H.B. Land Board will shortly be offering 43 aloltments in the Piri Piri block for sale or selection, either for cash, for occupation with right of purchase, or for renewable lease at the option of the selector. The largest of the sections is 234 acres in extent, while tho others range in area down to five acres. The majority of them, however, aro between 200 and 100 acres in size. Tho Piripiri block adjoins the Piripiri and Matamau railway stations, «m the «> ellington-Napier ' railway line, two miles from Daunevirke and seventy-seven' miles from Napier. It was formerly covered with heavy mixed forest, but nearly all tho marketable timber lias now been milled. All tho sections, with tho exception of some of the small areas, arc well watered, most of them by several streams. On the surrounding country dairying has been successfully carried on for a number of years', and all the small sections now offered' are suitr able for that class of farming.
