Williamson's Company (in con- : junction wrtL. L,ie.bler and Co., of Now York) at the Drill Hall, and will introduce one of Mrs Rice's most popular characters. The book in whose pages Sirs Wiggs lives must have been read; by a great many people, who will be delighted with the. opportunity of personal acquaintance, as it were, with, the lady who makes it a practice to "put all my worries down at the bottom of my heart, and then sit on the lid and smile." "Mrs Wiggs" is prodigal of wise sayings. "Matrimony," she says, "is like everything else. You get out of it just as much as yo\i put into it." She didn't find it so in her own case, but she tried "all she knew" to make it appear so. A complete Americaax company have been brought to New Zealand to present "Mrs Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch," as it would have been altogether impossible for an English or Australian company to import the necessary "atmosphere" to it. The play has proved a success everywhere. In "Mrs Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch," the laughs are said to be most continuous, but the pathetic element runs like a thread of silver through the piece. The central figure in "Mrs Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch," is a lovable, middleaged woman, with- a cheerful philosophy that never " fails her in her darkest hour. "The short but simple annals of the poor" are ilhistrated in this masterpiece of heart interest quite as the poet • "thought them and the author saw them, for "Mrs Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch" has a living and breathing prototype in Mrs Bass, the original of the story, who resides to this clay in Louisville, Kentucky.
