In the course of his evidence Armstrong stated that:on the; morning, of the 20th November, accused was: en-, gaged in the carpenters' shop at the prison. »r hen witness entered, the shoj) accused was making a; drawing on a piece of wood. Witness passed by and entered into . conversation with . the officer in charge. While thoy were looking at some partly finished work^witness received a heavy blow on tlio right side of the-.neck, and subsequently discovered : he had been wounded: ' - Medical evidence was to the effect that the wound was a serious one. Had it been half an inch further te tho front, it must have been fatal. A chisel could have* caused-' -the injury. " Accused said all he had done he had done because of hard treatment.. Ho was committed for trial. -
