PRODUCE CIRCULAR

. The N.Z. Loan and. Mercantilo Agency Co;, Ltd., have received the following from London, dated August

Wool : During the earlier part of this month, chiefly owing to the holidays in the manufacturing districts, the market ruled very quiet, but recently there has been a better feeling, and with some enqiiiry both from America and the Continent, several lots withdrawn from the auctions have been cleared, at prices fully up to the closing, rates of the series. There is no improvement to record in the general trade of the country, and in view of the comparatively lara;e quantity which will be available for the fifth series, it is satisfactory to find values for the* raw material and tops so well maintained.

Sheepskins : The auctions which were in progress at the date, of o\ir last report closed firmly on. tli'e 31st lllto. With autive competition, the large offering ol 5400 hales Australasian was almost cleared. As compared" with the rates ruling at the preceding sales, June 25th and 26th, merino combing advanced -}d per lb, other sorts being mostly unchanged, although fine and coarse New Zealand crossbred combing descriptions were sometimes -Jd per lb dearer. New Zealand hemp : The dominion offers very sparingly and the little business passing is mostly of a speculative character. Manila has advanced about 30s per ton, and in sympathy quotations - for New Zealand rule in sellers' favor compared with those given in our last advice. We quote: Good fair spot, £26 10s; Octo-ber-December, £26 and £26 10s: fair spot £22 10s to £22 los; October-De-cember, £22 10s; and fair current manila £23 10s per ton c.i.f. : Tow : In moderate request at £8 15s to £9 5s per ton ci.f. Cocksfoot : The market continues in a lifeless condition, and hardly any transactions have taken place. American seed is being offered more freely, 70s per cwt c.i.f. being asked for farmers' dressed and 83s to 84s per cwt Cii.fl for re-cleaned about 161 b, but so far with little response. The German seed is not of good quality, and is offering at 80s per cwt c.i.f. We-quote 171 b seed (nominal) 90s per cwt ex warehouse.

Tallow : There have been three public auctions during the period under review and at these a quiet demand has been experienced, but with firm holders prices are only slightly easier. There is a better feeling at the close and the general opinion is that values will not give way appreciably in the near future.' Practically no business has been passing in Australasian for arrival. AYe quote: Finest mutton 34s to 34s 6d, fair to good 32s 6d to 33s 6d, edible beef 33s to 355, and fair to good 31s 6d to 32s per cwt, ex warehouse.
