The mutton market is somewhat steadier on account of the small supply of beef, but there is only a; moderate demand. Canterbury brands. are quoted at 4£d; North Island, : 3fd; . There is a better demand for beef, which is in small supply, New Zealand beef being held for a rise in price. Hindquarters, 4s; forequarters, 3§d.

Tho butter is quiet but: firm and there is a good demand: The butter shipped by the Wakanui arrived in good condition, andus quoted at 116s per cwt; Danish, 119s; Siberian, 108s; Canadian, 115s. The cheese market is firm w ith" an improved demand. Canadian makes, 61s per cwt.

The hemp market is slightly weaker with less demand. • The following are the current quotations: Good fair grade on the spot, £27; fair grade .on the spot j £23 ; fair current manila on the spot, £23 10s; October to December shipments are quoted as follows : Good fair grade, £26 ; fair grade, £23;; fair cur rent, manila, £23 10s. Last week's output from Manila amounted to 24,000 bales. The cocksfoot seed market is very uncertain and there is very little New Zealand seed on hand. Buyers are not keen to do business^ as prices are too high. Bright clean 171Jb seed is quoted at 90s per cwt, nominal, American at 80s. . '
