Mr Holmes, Engineer-in-chief to the Public Works Department, Avho returned from tho north to-day, states that he was satisfied that if the weather during the coining winter was not unusually bad, the North Island Main Trunk railway would be open for traffic at the end of the year. He thinks the Makotote viaduct will be finished in two months, and that at the end of this month the gap between the railheads will be reduced to nine miles.
