CR. DRUMMOND'S LEAVE OF ABSENCE.

Just fancy wanting 12 months' leave of absence (for that is what it would hieah) and the general, election of councillors coming in that time. It would mean the disfraneJiisement of the 'borough..; for that period, and for what reason? Simply because they know that the ratepayez's would elect in his place a man that would be dead against their extravagant intentions, and I feel'sure the ratepayers, would be glad to have the same chance to get rid of a few more of them at the present juncture. And now,- Sir, .could ■■you tell me if the Council have the power to grant such an extended leave of absence. [The ratepayers put him there for <two years..-. Have the Council, the power to disfranchise the borough for half that irime? Cr-Drummond knew at the time of the last election that it was his intention to«go home soon. Why, then,, did he seek election? If ,he 'had resigned,' and the Council unanimously asked him to reconsider the matter^aild suggested leave of absence, it would not have been so pitiful, and woxild'have been more manly, but jt goes to prove that the Council knefo well w'hatl the- ratepayers will do -whenever they "get the chance of electing' a" Council a'gairi.—l am, etc., .RATEPAYER.
