After Bauer was murdered, Cutler, a jeweller of Little Collins street, informed the police that a man called at his shop and enquired for Bauer's address a few days ago. His description corresponded with that of a well-known Victorian criminal. Suspicion points that the fugitive has gone to Sydney. This idea fits in with the story that a man was smi to leave the building in a violent hurry a few minutes after a. Mo hailed a cab, telling the driver to go fast to Spencer street. The Sydney express left at 0.0 p.m.
