THE MELBOURNE MURDER.

Evidently robbery was the motive for the murder, as Mr Bauer had a habit of carrying a bag containing thousands of pounds' worth of precious stones and pearls, depositing them in a bank overnight. This bag is missing. It is stated to ha-.-e contained gems worth two or three thousand pounds. There are indications that Mr Bauer was struck down wlun weighing the diamonds on scales on the office table. His hat was pierced where the fatal blows were struck. Mr Bauer was a partner in the firm of Messrs Bauer, Sha inner and Bauer, importers and dealers in precious stones, doing a very targe business throughout Australasia. Ihey own a pearling fleet at Broome.
