Hatuma South and Lindsay were opened on October Ist. At the former Miss J. A. Morrison enrolled six pupils, and at the latter Miss Bedingfield commenced with fourteen. ' Applications. — For eight (Dannevirke South, Hatuma South, MaraetahaY Matamau, Motu, Pohui, Porangahau, and Tipapakuku) of the thirteen vacancies advertised this month there are no applicants, while for two others (Wakarara ahd Lindsay) there is only one. After inquiry, I learn that in some cases this is due to the difficulty assistant teachers find in obtainingaccommodation, at a reasonable figure. Correspondence from the various school committees was dealt with as follows :— •■-••.:-■••■ Dannevirke South— Subsidy of £1 for £1 up to £25 granted for fencing. Kumeroa— Grant of £1 for *ljdp to £5 to be made towards erection of-etrp- - board, rifle-rick, etc; and JBI7 10s sdto be paid for alterations to residence. Lindsay — Particulars of size and probable cost of shelter shed to be^ascertained. Sum of £2 10s granted for the erection of a gate. ' '";'-> '' i Mangahe— Mr Grant to report on the matter of the expenditure of the £100 grant and request for shelter shed. Mangatuna— Sumof £4 10s granted, for a tank. - :: "' *"■■".-- -.■■ " Ormondville— Sum of £2 10s granted for papering. : Tamaki - Bequest for a new school deferred. Wimbledon—Grant for metalling declined, the expenditure being unauthor- - ised. Woodville — Application that gas be installed in school and residence declined. Makotuku. — Miss Eva Hull appointed pupil teacher. Umutaoroa— Mr Edgar McGaughran. and Miss Elizabeth A. Walshe appointed pupil teachers. -.-"•'■. Ti Tree — Miss Morrison's resignation accepted. ; . ; The Education Department intimated that the sum of £2400 had been granted for a secondary and technical school - at, Hastings and an additional grant of ;' £50 for the W^ipawa technical school. — Received. On the recommendation of the architect it was decided to make a grant not exceeding £30 towards the erection of a porch at Dannevirke North. Accounts amounting to J64590 2s lOd were passed for payment. The chairman and Mr Maddison were appointed to confer with the representatives of the Builders' Union regarding the question of tenders for the Board's work. Mr Darton said that in. his opinion the Board's inspector was greatly overworked, and it was for that reason that he gave notice of the following motion for next meeting : — "That applications be called for a second inspector for the Hawke's Bay education district at a salary of £300 per annum." Mr Darton also gave notice of the following motion for nexfc meeting : — "That in the opinion of this Board it is advisable that the inspection of schools be undertaken by the Department.'' < On the motion of Mj Whittington, ' seconded by Mr Morgan^it was decided 3 to request the Railway • Department to stop the train to enable the Hatuma , children to proceed by it to the Hatuma school. It was decided to hold the future f I meetings of the^Board on the .evening ' 'of the .second MoncTay'in each month, committee meetings to be held on the afternoon oi the same day. The Board then adjourned;
