DEPUTATIONS.

» A deputation of local solicitors watted on the flon. Mr McGrowan this morning and urged that (he Stipendiary Magistrate who presides at Dannevirk'e (Mr James), should be Chairman of the'Waipawa Incensing Bench, as the Bench holds its meetings here, The Minister in reply expressed &c opinion that either of the Magistrates who presided in the district could act as Chairman. Mr J. J. Patterson asked that a new magisterial district be constituted and a Magistrate appointed to reside at Dannevirke. Mr Patterson, in support , of his request, referred to the great in- . crease in court business during the' past i few years, and stated that under exist- ; ing conditions the Magistrate was . always pressed for time, cases had to be ; adjourned, and consequently the public*-. s were put to extra expense and did not receive the consideration they were s entitled to. i Mr McGowan said he thought he now had the feelipg of the profession in the ! matter, and if the public requirements i warranted the creation of a new Magis- . trate's" district, with headquarters at Dannevirke, the Department would have to meet the public needs, and he would giva the question consideration. Mr Hall, M.H.R., said that he had long observed that Daunevirke was not receiving the attention in this matter that suck an important centre deserved. The Stipendiary Magistrate resided at Masterton, and therefore Masterton got the most consideration, and Dannevirke being at the end of the district* when the Magistrate came here he was in a hurry, and he had either to sit late at night or adjourn the cases, thus causing more expense to litigants. I Mr McGowan said he would ,give the ' question full consideration, and would endeavour to do justice in the matter, but he could not make a promise. The next question was as to the j creation of a higher court and it was i urged that such a court, would greatly facilitate the transaction of legal busf- ' ness, besides saving expense to litigants in travelling and attending sittings of. higher courts in other centres. ' Mr McGowan gave a similar I reply to that given to the previous 1 request, and added that it was evident j that Dannevirke had made rapid strides •lud the public therefor required extended conveniences.
