Mr Sutton has been re-appointed commercial agent in the East, with an increased salary and allowance. In the House of Representatives, the Government proposed to increase the spirit duties. It is meeting with considerable opposition. Mr Quick, chairman of the Tariff Commission, and several other members, have denounced the proposal. In the State Assembly a sensation was created during the discussion on the Small Holdings Bill. Mr Bent objected to the amendments, declaring' the Government intended to pass the Bill as it stood. Mr Murray, Minister for Lands, said he entirely disagreed with the attitude of the Premier. He welcomed criticism. Mr Bent warmly rejoined that Mr Murray had no right to tell the House that, because the Government had made v » its mind. If Mr Murray had any d Acuities about the Bill, let him withdraw it.
