FATAL ACCIDENT.

Yesterday a fatal accident occurred near one of Mr W. T. Irvine's Tamaki mills, by which a young man, aged 30, and named William Hansen, lost his life. Hansen, it appears, is an engineer by trade, and up to the day before yesterday was employed driving a log hauler in the Piri Piri bush for Mr Hoult. Leaving that employment, yesterday he proceeded to Tamaki in the endeavour to procure fresh employment. He apparently went into the bush, and during the afternoon was returning back to the mill on one of the log-laden trolleys. When the trolley had reached a rise and a bend in the tramway one of the logs, for some unexplained, reason, bumped off. According to some versions the trolley jumped the rails, and according to others ifc did not, but in any case the log became detached and deceased jumped off, but fell on the rails, rolling towards the trolley. At the same time the log rolled towards him and pinned him to the ground, crushing his thigh and pelvis .to a pulp. The unfortunate young fellow was at once extricated from his painful position by Mr Irvine's men who were with him, and he was brought into the hospital in the ambulance van late in the afternoon. There, of course, he received every attention, but from the first there was little hope of his recovery, as his injuries were so severe, and he succumbed during the night. Arrangemeuts are being made to hold an inquest at the Hospital tomorrow, when full particulars, which at present are rather yague, will no doubt be elicited. We understand that deceased leaves a widow and one child in Dannevirke, for whom considerable public sympathy will be felt in their sad bereavement.
