Australasian Championships. (Per Press Association) By Electric Telegraph— Copyright. Melbourne. Jan. 31. The weather was glorious for the Australasian Athletic Championship meeting, with a light wind across the track: The attendance was very moderate. Results:— 220 yards Championship— Barker 4N.5.W.) 1, Hunter (V.) 2,Nieholls(V ) 3. Smith (N.Z.) also ran. Barker led from the jump, winning very easily. = Time, 22 2-ssec. Also started— Saunderson (Q.), Dent and Lynch (N.S.W.), Ferguson (V.). Ferguson led for three laps, Pollock , lying fifth. Dent and Lynch retired, and then Saunderspn led for half a lap, but the two Victorians passed him, and a great race home ensued between the pair, Sutton beating Vfheatley by a yard, Pollock a poor third. Time, 4tnin 308-ssec, beating the Victorian record, Walt— Barrett (V.) .1, P^nny (N.S.W.) 2, Boss. (N.Z) 3. The only starters. Barrett in the eighth furlong lapped Penny, and treated Ross similarly in the next lap. Two laps irbui home Barrett and Boss were together. The New Zealander woa very comfoitably by 2J yards in 16 2 sth sec. High Jnmp^English (N.S.W.)5ft 7in 1, Laurie (N.Z.) and Fi^ancis ;(V.) tied for second place at sft 6in. Brake, MeDingan, Kirby, and Morgan (V.) also competed. At oft 6in Laurie was the only competitor who cleared the bar freely, and all except the placed men dropped out. Francis, English and Laurie each failed at the first try at sft 7in. Sawdust was then obtained. Francis missed. English cleared, but Laurie rapped the bar. Francis again failed, as also *did Laurie, the victory resting with English (the Australasian champion). 440 Yards Championship— Barker (N.S-W.) 1, Pollock (N.Z.) 2. Campbell (Q.) 2. Also ran : Wilkins (N.S.W), Scott (Q), Mcßae, Hunter and Nioholls (V.). Barker took the lead from the start, and was never caught, winning comfortably by eight yards. Time, 50 2-ssec. The points regist°ied to-day for the championship are : New South Wales 3, Victoria 2, New Zealand 1, Queeoslaud 0. Siinps-m (N.Z.) was present daring the afternoon, \and hopes to be able to start in the three-mile event on Monday. The attendance increased considerably duriug th<> afternoon, especially the ladie*. Pollock's great exertions in the mile race heavily handicapped him for the quarter nnilp, in which he whs blocked twice. He states that be feels j well and anticipates winning the half- j mile on Monday. Boss collapsed after the three-mile walk. Simpson is improving rapidly. Laurie slipped in jumping twice, which somewhat unnerved him. Smith won the hurdles magnificently, and was greatly applauded, tbe crowd being absolutely /impartial. The grouud was somewhat j dead after the recent raius. No new records were established. Though entered, nope of the competitors competed in ffie A.N.A. sports on Saturday night. On Sunday tbo visitors were present at a picnic as the guests of the Victorian Association.
