— -~» The football season was opened in Dannevirke yesterday, when a match was played between the Mangatera Pirates (late Otanga) and the Dannevirke Club. The game was very well contested, and resulted in a win for Dannevirke by 5 points to nil, A. Carlson scoring a try, from which he kicked a goal. Although early in tbe season, RQtne very good form was shown byseveral players on both sides, and some interesting struggles may be anticipated when the championship matches commence. The Dannevirke Sub-union met at Baddeley's Junction Hotel last evening, Mr A. Pawson occupying the chair. The balance-sheet, showing a credit balance of £3, was adopted. A motion that the Union be comptsexi of delegates who are non-players of the various clnbs was earned unanimously. It was reported that Woodville, Dannevirke and Mangatera Pirates intended entering teams for a junior championship. The newly -constituted union of nonplayers as delegates will meet at the Masonic Hotel at 6.30 p.m. on Saturday, when tbe first round of fixtures will be diawn. It is the intention of the Dannevirke Sub-union to endeavor to commence the first round of championship matches on Wednesday, May 6.
