V (united press association.) Wellington, April 22. The death occurred tonight of Captain Babot, one of the best known shipmasters m New Zealand, and for many years superintendent of the Shaw, Saville and Albion Company. Dunedin, April 22. At the Benevolent Trustees meeting the chairman said tbat one-fifth of the applicants for relief were Chinamen. Palmerston N., April 22. The District High School building was opened to-day. Christchurch, April 22. The question of sewing mistresses for country schools was before the Education Board to-day. No provision having been made for them in the Teachers' Salaries Act, it was resolved tbat the D epartmeut should be informed of the necessity for providing sewing mistresses for country schools, and that attention should be again drawn to the urgent necessity for paying an adequate salary, at least 50 per cent more than is paid under the manual and technical regulations. At the Police Court to-day Madame Greclcles, charged with " using subtle craft, to wit, palmistry, to deceive and impose on his Majesty's subjects," was fined 5s and costs.
