A Brewer Fined.

in reference t» the fine of L6O, With costs making it overL7o with forfeiture of utensils, inflicted- on Halsted Harley, brever of Feilding, the Collector of Customs stated that he had paid an official visit to the brewery on 25th February last, and found, by examination of the books, that there should have been eight hogsheads and 36 gallons of beer in stock* He was ohown the barrels supposed to contain this quantity, but on testing two nbgshßacU and two 36-gallbn casks he found tiiey contained water only. This ;the brewer called hop tonic. He directed Harley not, to move the casks Containing water, but on the day following on his return from Palmerston he learned at the Post Office that Harley had purchased two hogshead stamps and three 36-gallon stamps, and on visiting the brewery found that the water casts had apparently run off. Constable Healey had tested the water in the casks. He had never known beer made with less than three bushels to the hogshead. The constable deposed that the casks with a gimlet contained water. The defendant said the " bop tonic " contained all the ingredients of beer; but as-tlifrjresnft of an accident to the temperator, the brew had not been successful. . Ben Poole stated he had purchased the spoilt beer as a job lot for L 2 10s for the use of his mdn.
