Dear Sir,— I HAVE to acknowledge the re* receipt of a cheque for £137 15s 7d, being balance payable under policy No. 54,118 on the life of my son, Alfred Andresen Friis, and I dssire to thank the Department for its promptitude in paying the claim. I also wish to place on record the fact that the policy, which was taken out in June, 1886, and on which premiums ceased to be paid in 1894, was, ■ notwithstanding, kept alive by the Department's liberal system of surrender value until the date of my son's death last month. The sum. assured, £200, plus bonuses £38 18s, less arrears of premium, has, therefore, been paid to me quite unexpectedly, as I thought that the policy had lapsed long ago.
