Dear Sir.— I HAVE to acknowledge the " rereceipt of a cheque for £ 137 Ids 7d, being balance payable under policy No. 54,118 on the life of my son, Alfred Andresen Friis, and I desire to thank the Department for iis promptitude in paying the claim. 1 also wish to place on record the f act that the policy, which was taken cut in June, 1886, and on which pre* niuma ceased to be paid in 1894, was, r otwithstandiog, kept alive by the Department's liberal system of surrender valne until the date of my son's death last montb. The sum assured, £200, plus bonuses £38 18s, less arrears of premium, has, therefore, been paid to me quite unexpectedly, as I thought that the policy had lapsed long ago.
