* (Per Press Association.) Christum ltjuch, March 20. The annual dhow of the Cheviot. Settlers' Association was held to-day, and was very successful. The Hon Ball Jones was present, and was entertained by the association. In response to the toast of his healtn he promised that there should be no cessation of the railway works, and that the 200 men now employed would be increased to 250 after the harvest. He hoped to have the line opened to the Cheviot shortly. With reference to future surpluses, he thought something should be done to assist widows and children left in poor circumstances. He had made a list of husbands who ■ had died during cbe past five years, and allowed for a gift of LtOO to eaoh widow, and Lfi to eaah child under fourteeu years of age, he was agreeably surprised to find that L.100,000 would meet such an expenditure.
