Melbourne, This day. Worthington has been sentenced to seven years' hard labour.

Prior to his sentence he was asked if he had anything to say. He replied : "'^l had thought to mention three things, and hope they will mitigate the sentence. First : During the last fifteen months my health hag been seriously impaired ; second : Your Honour might have consideration for my wife and children ; lastly : I ask you to remember I have been in prison for two months.; I may also say that my wife yesterday: sent me her forgiveness for what had, been revealed, and asked me to mention: to you she had done so. That is all I: wish to say." : ■.'.'■"

The Judge, in passing sentence,. said: "You have been convicted on \ four separate charges of obtaining money or valuable securities by false pretences. The evidence disclosed some very disgraceful conduct on your part. I must say Hook upon you as one of the most dangerous importers that has ever come into this country." He than sentenced Worthington -to eighteen months' for the first two offences, and two years' for each of the other two offences, the sentences to be cumulative.

Prisoner was stunned on hearing his sentence, and a warder led him from the dock.
