» ' ■ We have to acknowledge receipt of the first number of tbe above magazine, printed and published by Messrs Arthur Cleave and Co., Auckland, for the New Zealand Illustrated Migazine Co. The introductory nrticle is by Professor H. A. Talhot-Tubbs.in which he expresses tbe liopps and views «f the promoters. There is a tbougbtful and eloquent article by Professor Bickerron, F.CS., on the * Outlook of the Coming Century.' In the eection, ' Under the. Public Eye,' are given portraits of the Earl of Ranfurly and th« Countass of Kanfurly, and of Patara te Tubi, a well known Waikato chief, and Mr A. T. Ngata, M.A., the one representing the Maori of the old time and the other tbe Maori up-to-date. Mrs Malcolm Rnss contributes a story entitled ' Jenkins, Sailor and Steeplechaser : A Chat with an Old Timer.' G. M. Newton deals with the question of the hour, 'Tb<? Australian Commonwealth and New Zealand.' 1 The Opal Cliff,' by F. Can, is a gruesome talc of the Australian desert and opal prospeating— of thirst and death. Professor Maclaurin, M.A., LL.M.. discourses on 'University Life in the Middle Ages,' commencing with a supnositioun visit to the universities of Paris towards the end of the 13th century, with subsequent references to the Italian, Germnn, and Kngliah universities, about which much quaint and curious lore ia given. Cowan tak«'S as his theme ' The Poetic Side of the Maori, 1 the article being illustratpd by oumorous quotations from Maori poetic legends and luroenta, chants of welcome, etc. Joseph Ormond treats of ' Education in New Zealand, 1 and suggests ' the ideal syllabus. 1 Thos. Cottle, whose name is familiar from some of bis previous contributions to colonial literature, furnishes a readable story, ' Her Long-lost Brother,' illustrative of colonial life. There are two short stories, 'A Dream of Hearts,' by Olive Tilly, and 'The Little Mother,' by Kerori Hale ' Art, Drama, and Music ' are dealt with by W. E. Outhwaite, who gives some interesting information concerning old musical identities, illustrated by photographs. C. E. S. Gillips deals ' with ' Form is Golf,' and Danvern Haniber with ' Sports and Pastimes.' M. A. Sinclair furnishes a story, 1 Marinetta, 1 for the children. The section, 'Bound the World,' completes the prose contributions. Poetry is represented by 'Love, the Inventor,' hy J. L. Kelly, ' Triumph,' by David Will M. Burn, and 'A Lament," by Carrie T»sb.
