Mr Wood, Mayor of Palmerston North, wired this morning requesting us to notify that in connection with the funeral of tho late Mr A. MoHardy, whioh is to take place at Havelook to-morrow, a special train will leave Palmorston for Hastings at 8 a.m. to-morrow, returning in the evening. Stoppages will be made at all the principal stations along the line to pick up passengers. The train will arrive at Dannevirke at about 9.15 a.m. Those who have promised subscriptions towards the purchase of a site for another school, and all in favor of the movement, are reminded of the meeting to be held at the Oddfellows Hall at 8 on Monday evening to discuss matters connected therewith. The Pirate Football Olub'a social, to have been held next Tuesday, has been postponed to a date which will be announced shortly. There can be little doubt that in deciding to hold its first championship meeting at Dupedin or Invercargill the Caledonian Association has made a great mistake. A more central place, Wellington for preference, should hßve been chosen in order to allow all the affiliated Societies to be represented. A strong team uas being organised in Dannevirke to compete for the ohampionship under the impression that the meeting would be held at Wellington, but it will be impossible for our representatives to travel to the southern end of the colony, and many, other sooietiea are placed in a similar position. On a seotion between Knight and McPhee stroets there is a gravel pit nearly 10 feet deep, whioh has lately been full of •water. It has become a favorite resort for children in the vicinity, and within the past 'ortnigbt there have been tw« narrow escapes from drowning. The local authorities should see to it that the pit is closed up at once, otherwise it will probably be the oauee of loss of life before very long. The annual meeting of the Dannsvirke Caledonian Society will be held next month. The Society is to be reorganised in accordance with the regulations of the Caledonian Association of New Zealand, and changes are to be made which it is hoped will place it on a much better footing than hitherto and add to the importance and succbss of its sports gatherings. The musical Society held a very ouccesaful practice on Thursday evening, and six hew members were eleoted. The Society will probably maka its first bow to the public in December, and half the proceeds of the concert will be given to the Brass Band's uniform fund, the balance being devotad to payment of the Society's expenses and the purchase of new music. A pbreno-physiognomical leotura is to be delivered by Mr B. Larsen at the Salvation Array barracks next Wednesday evening. The lecture will bo illustrated by 50 lantern slides, and as the admission is only Gd, a large audience is expected. The quarterly meeting of the We»leyan Church, held on Wednesday, was presided over by tha BaT. T. Francis Tones, of Wnllington. Moat of the officials and the circuit minister were present. AH the reports presented were of a very cheering character. Membership returns showed an increase, tha Sunday Sohool reported 114 scholars, and average attendance more than douhle last quarter.
