The Dominion liner Scotsman'was stranded in the Belle Isle Straits ; 250 passengers were rescued. (Received Sept. 30, 9.55 a.m.) i v * v _*nww. this day. ' A. big fire has bean raging since 3 this morning in the premises of W. "smith, wholesale stationer and prfeter, a 6-storey brick huUdinginßndieA street, tbe oentre of a large block, 'IS-"' eluding the P. and 0., Huddart.Parker, North German, Mewagarieg, -Untune, and a number of other large shipping and commercial companies. Smith'* premises and the'two top floors of the P. and O. were" gutted, and the other* severely damaged by fire and water. The fire is now well in hand. There ig an immense crowd in the streets. All the inmates are safe. Thero were some remarkable escapes. (Received Sept. 30, 11.50 a.m.) The fire is out. It originated in Smith's composing room on the fourth floor. The damage by fire is confined , to Smith's fcur top storeys arid the P. and O. top floors. Tho latter ware let as offices. The damage by water is very extensive. Amongst the sufferers besides shipping companies are Holder Bros., Queensland Paoking Company, Bergyl Meat Exporters, ParburgHentz Company merchant*, Harvey Company tea merchants, J. and T. Brown mercantile brokers, Lohmaun and Company wool brokers, Mort'g Dock Company's offioes, Goraett Eugene Company wool brokers, Lever Bros, soap manufacturers, Siemens and Co. electrical engineers, Harper and Henderson" consulting engineers. It is impossible to estimate the loss, but it is many thousands.
