PITY IS NOT WANTED.

| (To the Editor.) Srn,— Mr Hall held a meeting at Matamau last Thursday afternoon, and Mr j France, ser.r., occui ied the chair. At the conclusion of the address tho chairman rose and made quite an eloquent speech in favour of Mr Hall. In the course of his remarks he said how he pitied the holders of one, seven, or even forty-acre sections in Matamau, and that it was quite impossible for thorn to make a livelihood on such small sections. Now, Mr Editor, Mr France, or rather France and Son, own over a thousand acres close to Matamau. He said himself that Uo had too much, but it is well known that he is only awaiting a chance to get part of Piiipiri should the Government succeed in opening it for settlement. Let his pity talte a practical form and not grab all the land he can, but allow tho poor man he pities to have a chance. He further remarked that the men of Matamau had to leave their wives and families and get work in Danevirke, or even as far as To Aute. Mr France has over a thousand acres and gives employment to one man for about six months of the year. He called for ten lers for bush felling some time since, and I conclude that none were low enough for acceptance, as the bush still stands. How the electors of Matamau could sit there and be pitied by such a liberal man as Mr France, 1 cannot comprehend. If Phi Pii ibe opened a lot of benelit if will be to the small settlers of Matamau if a few like Mr France get on it. They will then, as Mr France says they now are, be between the workhouse and the jail. Let us have pratical illustration of his pity. Yours etc., Vrn»f la
