The School Mates.
'Twas on a mild September eve Two merry boys irom school, With boats iv band, proclaimed aloucl, " Let' 3 sail tbem in tho pool." A mill-pond long deserted, With banks o'er huns, with grnss, A snug riitreat where morry boys Tho happy hours might pass. Thoy nailed theii' boats and shouted loud, Ami clapped thoir hands with glee, To ace their boats liko sailing ships Glide o'er tho mimic sea. At length the oldest mide a grasp To bring his boat again to land, Slipped oil the hank into the pool Heyond nil reach oi helping hand. His schoolmate, with quicK generous thought, Plunged headlong ill tlid pool. To reeeu a ono he dearly loved, The pniie of all tho school ; Twaa more than vain, lie could not save Hii enm-ado, though lie triod, But. true, in friendship to the grave, Hand clasped iv hand they died.
