STRAY CATTLE AT WEBER.

(To the Editor.) . Sir,— l wish to call the attention of the members of the WeHer Eoad Board to a large source of revenue which they are allowing at present to goto waste. During a yisit to Herbertviile I was much struck by the number of cattle grazing on the road between Weber and that place.; I think if some settlers will save their paddock* by turning cattle and horses into the long paddock they should pay something extra to keep the road in repair, which I have no doubt they would be perfectly willing to do if the matter is laid before them fairly. Anyone knowing the nature of the soil must know what damage a few small mobs of heavy cattle and horses will do to water tables md embankments, and it appears to me to be simply an expensive faice for us to pay rates to be spent in clearing up after cattle whose owners are too careless to keep them off roads where formed. They are also a source of great danger to travellers after dark, as they are sure to be found camped on the dryest part of the road, and it is not pleasant to light. on one as you come round an, angle on a timid horse, as I know, having been run into a fence from that very cause last week. If owners don't care about paying for the use of the road as grazing ground, I would suggest that the Eoad Board or County Council establish a pound in some central place, and I have no doubt it would do a large and flourishing trade. Thanking you in anticipation, I am, <_re., A Small Settler Weber.
