MAKOTUKU.
This district is surely rising in importance, judging fron^ the large amount of business done inauctioneering during the last fortnight, and strange to say, that though everybody is complaining of bad times sufficient money was forthcoming to render the gentlemen conducting these sales thoroughly satisfied with their ventures. We are all anxiously lopking out. for the completion of the new hall, which event Mr Gasson intends celebrating by a plain and fancy dress ball, on which occasion the ladies and gentlemen of the locality will have a good chance of displaying their taste and ingenuity. Since some few factious spirits have been trying to cause unpleasantness about " that harmonium, I have no doubt the greater portion of the community will learn with pleasure that
the school committee, by an unanimous vote, have endorsed their Chairman's action in lending it to Mr Fergusson, which will, I trust, have the effect of closing the controversey. The committee of the North Seventy Mile Bush Horticultural and Industrial Association, appointed at previous" meeting, met at the Beaconsfield Hotel last evening, and general rules were formulated for presentation at next public meeting, to be held on Aug. 20th, at the same place. Intending members are especially requested to attend. On the conclusion of the business of the Horticultural Association, a meeting was held to consider the advisability of starting a night school, in Makotuku, about 25 haying signified their willingness to join. Mr Fergusson, our head teacher, on being asked, consented to take charge. The terms fixed were Is for two nights per week, commencing on Wednesday, the 15th inst. I may here mention that Mi Gasson has kindly placed the public hall at Mr Fergusson's disposal for this purpose free of charge. '
