Auckland, Monday.

Myas, a deserter from H.M.S. Blanche, whose continuous remands by the Magistrate has brought the case before the public, is to be placed on board H.M.S. Sapphire on her arrival from Sydney. A young lady narrowly escaped drowning at the North Shore while bathing. In diving her bathing dress got on her head and kept her down. Two of the crew of the Teviot at the wharf rescued her. A match has been made between the Transit and Torea for £l5O a side.

The monthly gold return is 2000 ozs. A Maori named Hone Pinita, who escaped from custody by jumping overboard from a vessel at Hokianga Heads, was surrendered to-day by a Maori chief at the Police Court, and sentenced to 3 months’ imprisonment, in addition to his original sentence of 6 months. Charles Neith, proprietor of the Blue Post Dining Rooms, was charged with indecently assaulting a Maori lodging one night on liis premises. The case is proceeding.

Wellington, Monday. A fire occurred at Taita on Saturday ‘ night, caused by an explosion -of a kerosene lamp. A collision occurred between the steammers Go Ahead and Hura off Terwia on Sunday at 4 a.m. A passenger on the Hura says that every attempt was made to • steer clear, but the Go Ahead came right * on, knocking a hole in the port bow, rebounded, and scraped alongside. ' Both : the steamers serious injury had been done they resumed their journey, the Go Ahead going on to Wellington, the Hura coming to Wanganui. The shock of the collision was sufficient to throw everyone off their feet. The Hura, in the act of sheering off, caused the Go Ahead to strike her in an oblique > direction, not full on. There was great. excitement amongst the passengers on the Hura, who presented Captain Holmes with a testimonial on his arrival.

Invercargill, Menday.

Messrs. Stout and BaUance arrived here on Saturday, and were received at the platform by the Mayor and a number of gentlemen. They were afterwards interviewed by several deputations on matters of local interest. In the evening Mr. Stout addressed a meeting in the Assembly Hall, expressing similar opinions to those contained in his Dunedin speech.
