General Roberts- held a durbar at Jellalabad, where all the chiefs of the Afghan frontier were assembled, and there he announced to them that henoeforth Great Britain was to be the sovereign power. A riot originating among the students at Kiev produced a great disturbance and bloodshed. The troops were called out and fired among the rioters, with the result that 80 students were killed.
