RADIO PHONE CALLS TO U.S.
£3 13/ FOR THREE MINUTES \ P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. The opening of a direct radiotelephone service between New Zealand and the United States as from October 26 was announced to-day by the acting-Postmaster-General, Mr. Jones. He stated that he felt sure that the service, which would be available daily, excluding Sundays, between the hours of 6 a.m. and'B a.m., would cement further the close ties which exist between the two countries. Tests which had been carried out indicated that excellent speech could be expected over, the circuit, said the Minister, and no doubt many friendships which were made while the United States servicemen were in New Zealand would be renewed over the telephone circuit. A minimum charge of £3 15/ for a call of three minutes' duration would apply, each additional minute being charged at the rate of £1 5/. The charges are the same as those which apply to calls between New Zealand and Britain.
