CROWDS AT BEACHES SPORTING ATTRACTIONS Brilliant sunsnine favoured Auckland Labour Day holiday-makers today and there were big crowds on the beaches and at the various sporting attra.. as. It was appareμt from the many people in light sportswear in Queen Street this morning that Aucklanders .vere regarding the day as the summer "kick-off" and were taking fuii advantage of the brief w ' om work. Ferry traffic across the harbour was heavy, with thousands on their way to the beaches and others crossing from the North Shore to attend the second day of the Auckland Trotting Club's spring meeting at Alexandra Park. Direction of vehicular traffic on both sides of the harbour was assisted by Automobile Association patrols, one being stationed at the junction of the Birken.head and Devonport highways at Glenfield and the other at Mechanics' Bay. Evidence of the popularity of Waiheke Island was the fact that the Devonport Steam Ferry Company's Kestrel and Peregrine each carried 1000 passengers to the island this morning. A few people had to be left behind, as both ferries were packed. There has been a marked increase in the number of week-end residents at Waiheke in recent years, and many passengers were carried on Friday. Three trips back to the city will be made later to-day. Though the water was rather cool, there were many in swimming both at the beaches and the public baths. The Olympic swimming pool at Newmarket opened for the new season on Saturday. Yachts "";re on the harbour in large numbers to-day after chilly conditions on Saturday and yesterday. The annual sports, meeting in the Domain this afternoon attracted followers of athletics, and the open golf tourney at Titirangi was continued. Tennis clubs also held competitions in the city and suburbs. There was bowling at 12 city and suburban clubs. Apart from one or two milk bars, no shops in the city were open today. There were queues at the various theatres, but, in the main, Auckland spent its holiday out of doors.
