VALLEY BOY WINS

WAIKATO HUNT MEET BERYL VAALS AND ETARO Valley Boy, who won his first race, a Novice Handicap, last November, proved equal to winning the Members' Memorial, the principal flat race, at the combined race meeting of the Waikato, Rotorua and Bay of Plenty Hunts' Clubs at Cambridge to-dav, when the perfect weather attracted a record holiday attendance. Hippodrome, who has -been unlucky in big handicaps since winning at the Pakuranga meeting in , August, was the inner-up. The going was in good order. Beryl Vaals outclassed the field in the Farmers' Steeples,, and the aged Oration gelding Etaro just managed to get home in the Hunters' Hurdles. Valley Boy finished solidly to win the Members' Memorial from the consistent but unlucky Hippodrome, who, ■ after moving Into a hanay position at the turn, stood no chance with the winner In the closing stages. Bueno gave his best performance to date in open class, but Heroic Star weakened quickly half-way down after being the actual leader as they straightened up. Heroic Star was the leader as they settled down, the Vaals gelding showing the way past the stand from Sir Dingle, Valley Boy, Autoscore, Bueno, Dies Faustus and Brahman. Gaelic Salute ran up behind Heroic Star going down the back, and he was Joined by Brahman half a mile from home, where Dies Faustus, Hippodrome and .Valley Boy were handily placed behind "them. Brahman was on terms with Heroic Star racing to the turn, with Valley Boy and Hippodrome challenging, Valley Boy coming through in the straight to win well from Hippodrome, with Bueno only a head away. Sir Dingle was fourth followed by Autoscore, Heroic Star and Dies Faustus. Tilting and Brown Night There were sufficient scratchlngs to run the Bardowle Handicap, In two divisions. Tilting won the first after being well placed throughout, and fighting on in an exciting finish with Flying Jim and Valued, who weakened inside the distance after attempting to win from end to end. Valued was followed early by Tilting, Desirous, Last Sign and Spearfast. There was little alteration across the top, except that Alnajo was moving up and, racing to the turn, Alnajo joined issue with Valued, only to run wide and settle his prospects. In a fine finish Tilting got I there by a head from Flying Jim, with Valued another head away. Last Sign was fourth, closely followed by Alnajo, Peter, Whirlwind Star and Golden Reign. Brown Night came home well to win the second division, wearing down Hazara after the latter had attempted an end-to-end success. Fair Dlnkum was first to break the line, and led out from To-night, Sailor's Song and Hazara. The latter moved through to hit the front across the top and lead into the straight from Omaib, Sailor's Song, Craven, Fair Dinkum and Sweet Baffles. Brown Night did best In the run home to beat Hazara by threequarters of a length, with Sailor's Song half a length away in front of Craven. Fair Dlnkum was next and then came Sweet Baffles and Jeep. Beryl Vaals Easily Beryl Vaals gave a fast and clever exhibition of jumping to win the Farmers' Steeplechase, drawing right away from the opposition in the last two furlongs to win with something in reserve. Ngamotu gave a solid display, and, though he was on terms with Beryl Vaals three furlongs from home he was unable to finish with the winner when the pressure was applied. The win favourite, Yank, and Tanga Te Pai fell at the end of three furlongs, and Sir Inness balked and threw his rider entering on the back the last time. Ngamotu and Beryl Vaals sorted themselves out in the early running, this pair being clear entering on the final round from Klllarney Lad, Owing, Toronto, Lord Mascot and Prince Appellant. Beryl Vaals ran up to Ngamotu along the back and, outjumping him, drew to a clear lead as they raced to the turn. Nothing had a chance with Beryl Vaals at the end and she won easily by a dozen lengths from Ngamotu, with Toronto another two lengths away. Scale was fourth, followed by Prince Appellant, Lord Mascot and Owing. Etaro By a Neck Etaro, after taking the lead a furlong and a half from home, fought on tenaciously in the Hunters , Hurdles to hold off Greek Boy by a neck. The race was run at a fast pace. Royal Musgo shooting to the front at the outset and leading past the stand from Hunters' Night, Orphan's Song, Evening Coat, Tangirere, Greek Boy and Etaro. Merger went through fast down the back to hit the front half a mile from home and lead from Etaro, Evening Coat, Greek Boy and Orphan's Song. A little further on Etaro ran past Merger, and this pair levelled up for home, with Greek Boy close up and Evening Coat and Water Flight within striking distance. Greek Boy challenged strongly from the last fence, but Etaro, under pressure, got there by a neck. Merger was three lengths away third, in front of Water Flight, Evening Coat, Tangirere, Hunters' Night and Orphan's Song. Fast Maid lost her rider early. Upton also dislodged his jockey entering on the last round. Royal Musgo fell at the last fence. The ruling favourite, Dumbo, was withdrawn after the opening of the totalisator, it being found that he was ineligible to start. BARDOWIK HANDICAP m ' £260. * Seven f urlonsrs. ••.
