POLICE RAIDS Of FIJI O.C. SUVA, Oct. 12. In a drastic clean-up in the Nadi district the police, between Saturday and Tuesday, recovered a large quantity of arms, ammunition, explosives and other military property. As a result seven persons face no fewer than 20 charges, most of which are concerned with the illegal possession of Army property or the possession of stolen property. A summary of the recovered property lists the following items:— Ammunition, 2899 rounds; rifles, 4; rifle grenades, 6; pistol (.45), 1; gelignite, 3 plugs; sheets. 2; blankets, 3; saws, 2; cleaning rod, 1. A few days later another haul was made by the police, marking the second stage of what has become known as the "Nadi clean-up." As a result of this second sweep seven persons face a total of 21 charges. The recovered property comprises:— 5 rifles, 2 pistols, 390 rounds of ammunition, and G rifle grenades.
