SEA AS A CAREER
TRAINING OF N.Z. YOUTHS
SUGGESTED USE OF PAMIR
Parliamentary Reporter.
WELLINGTON, this day
The need for providing facilities for the training of young New Zea- ; landers who wished to take up the sea as a career, was emphasised in the House of Representatives yesterday by Mr. Lowry (Govt, Otaki), who urged the establishment of a Sol of navigation in Wellington and asked the Government to consider the taking over of the fourmasted barque Pamir, in which at least 40 boys could be trained in the art of seamanship. He wanted to see the vessel made a proper training ship, on which boys for a period of years could undergo a proper course under a nautical schoolmaster, if necessary. At the end of their term they could then present themselves for a second officer's ticket at an appropriate college. The Minister of Marine, Mr. O'Brien, said that as soon as a sufficient number of students could be offiedta Wellington the Government would start a branch of the Sol If navigation. There had been manv suggestions for using the S continued Mr. O'Brien. One wls that 40 cadets should be given In opportunity for four years' service but nautical advisers ware not keen on this proposal. They suggested that if young men did get fhis experience in sail, they would Su have to obtain two years pvnerience in steam. Another point was that it was necessary to tram as well as officers. However, the Pamir could be used for tramtag, and it was suggested that a r-nmrnittee be appointed by the Snraent to decide the best of training, though they £a! not yet reached this stage.
